Karol Rafał Bula


In 1959 he completed Theory of Music at the Academy of Music in Katowice as well as Musicology at the Jagiellonian University. He attained his Phd degree at the University of Arts in Berlin. In 1966-1971 he worked as the editor at the Polish Music Publishing House in Krakow (starting in 1968 he headed the Enclyclopedia editing office there). In 1972-1995 he lectured at the Academy of Music in Katowice (history of music, sociology of music, methodology of music education). He was a frequent speaker at national and international conferences and symposia. The collection of Karol Bula’s more prominent publications includes over 55 items (including publications in German and English) as well as editing of several books.

Since 1958 he has collaborated with the Silesian Philharmonic in Katowice and other philharmonic orchestras in the country as a music commentator. He has also teamed up with the Polish Radio and Polish Television. He currently continues to be actively involved in numerous professional and social-cultural journals as a music publicist.

Starting in 1969, for over twenty years, he headed the Commision for Music Propagation among Children a Youth sponsored by The Association of Polish Musicians and in 19802002 he was a Member of the Board of Directors of the Association of Polish Musicians in Warsaw Starting in 1994 he’s been the Director of the Adam Didur International Competition of Opera Singers in Bytom. Since 1980 he has been a member, a Chairman starting in 2007, of the jury of the Orfeus Award at the International Festival of Contemporary Music, Warsaw Autumn.

For his accomplishments Karol Bula was recognized as an „Activist in Culture of Outstanding Merit” (1996) and received The Gold Badge of the Association of Polish Musicians (1972), The Cross of Merit (1977), The Gold Badge of the Polish Section of ISME (1979), The Gold Badge of Outstanding Merit in Development of Katowice County and The Cross of Merit of the Revival of Poland (1985).

Dr. Karol Bula has been the President of the Karol Szymanowski Music Society for 5 terms from 1994 to 2011. The General Assembly of the Society in 2011 bestowed on him the title of Honorary Member and Honorary Chairman
